About Us
The BDC is a non-profit community development corporation working to improve the quality of life in the Binghampton community.
Founded in July 2003, the BDC began pursuing a strategy to support the revitalization of this historic neighborhood through housing and economic development and empowerment programs for those plagued by issues of systemic poverty. In collaboration with community leaders, residents and other organizations, the BDC works to mitigate blight, build hope, and restore justice.
The BDC serves the neighborhood by investing in people and property toward a stronger and more self-sustaining future. The BDC consistently works to:
Build personal capacity through mentorship and hard and soft skill training for adults.
Invest its resources, relationships and professional capacities in the property assets of Binghampton to abate the severe property blight that harbors crime and discourages residents
Provide quality, attractive and affordable rental and homeownership opportunities for current residents, as well as for those who will add to the asset base of the community.
Develop physical community assets (parks, gardens and neighborhood commercial services) that enhance the quality of life and catalyze other just investments in Binghampton.
About Binghampton
The Binghampton neighborhood is located at the geographic center of Memphis, representing two square miles and 12,111 residents. Binghampton began as an independent and racially integrated rural Memphis town in the late 1800s and early 1900s. The community experienced a shift in character as the city’s growth pushed east and urban manufacturing jobs departed, leading to various stages of racial segregation, poverty and population flight. These changes spawned a significant reduction in home ownership and increase in vacant and blighted property.
